Oncoviruses

HPV and Cervical Cancer

Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) have been confirmed as a cause of cervical, anal, penile and vaginal cancers. In particular, 14 genotypes have been shown to bear pro-oncogenic properties and are known as the 'high-risk genotypes': 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68. Molecular detection of these 14 high-risk HPV in pap smears is being recommended by governments in several countries.

High-Risk HPV Genotyping
